DAMNATION DEFACED – THE DEVOURER

What in the world is science-fiction death metal?!
Well, that’s how this five-piece from Northern Germany describes their distinctive style of metal music: brutally grooving melodic death metal enriched by synths, soundscapes and noises that one would rather expect in sci-fi movies or games.

Their music alongside with the look of their videos, promotion pictures and the lighting design of their live shows culminates in a sub-genre that surely wasn’t invented by them but will make waves in the extreme metal scene – especially with “The Devourer”.
Its predecessor “Invader From Beyond” already captivated the listener with its attention to detail and its self-created lyrical universe and story-telling besides its omnipresent spherical and futuristic sound character. Contrary to their focus on mid-tempo on that one, “The Devourer” shows Damnation Defaced at full throttle. Songs like “Between the Innocence and Omnivores” or “Race for the Grail” include a huge portion of attacking blast beat and double bass madness which brings more variety into their songwriting than ever before. Nonetheless, a slower paced song like “The Dark Companion” also underlines the versatility of this record. “Tiefenrausch” reveals another surprise with its mostly German lyrics that might remind of Rammstein due to the lyrical esthetics but certainly fits well into the album’s plot.

After a few years of absence, former bassist Mathias Opitz helped Damnation Defaced and put a lot of passion in creating the instrumental introduction and the interlude of the album, which really was a very emotional and inspiring reunion. David Hambach, who has been responsible for the band’s videos during the last couple of years, once again created the synth tracks.
The new record was recorded and mixed by the trustful hands of Hannes Huke (Institut für Wohlklangforschung, Hanover), who also handles the band’s live sound duties. Whereas the mastering was done in the renowned Hansen Studios by no one other than Jakob Hansen himself. The Danish man is famous for his modern style and perfectly honed “The Devourer”. The epic artwork was done by Pär Olofsson (Exodus, Aborted, a.o.).

The end result is a mix of sophisticated death metal, catchy hooks and the extraordinary sci-fi style and can be recommended to fans of Gojira, Decapitated or even Soilwork.

Was zur Hölle ist Science-Fiction Death Metal?! So beschreibt der Fünfer aus Norddeutschland nämlich seinen unverwechselbaren Stil. Brutaler, groovender Melodic Death Metal gepaart mit Synthesizern, Klangteppichen und eben Sounds, die man eher in SciFi Filmen oder Games erwartet. Mit der entsprechenden Optik in Videos, Bandbildern und Lichtshow bei Konzerten ergibt sich daraus ein Sub-Subgenre, welches zwar nicht von der Band erfunden wurde, aber durch das sie spätestens mit dem neuen Album „The Devourer“ im Extreme Metal für Furore sorgen werden.

Bereits der Vorgänger „Invader From Beyond“ bestichte neben dem sphärischen und futuristischen Soundcharakter durch Detailverliebtheit und einem selbstgeschaffenen lyrischen Universum und Story-Telling. Doch im Gegensatz zum stark auf Midtempo fokussierten Album von 2017 haben DAMNATION DEFACED auf „The Devourer“ das Gaspedal ein bisschen mehr durchgetreten. Songs wie die Single „Between Innosence and Omnivores“ oder „Race for the Grail“ kommen mit einer ordentlichen Portion Blasts und Doublebass und damit mehr Varianz im Songwriting daher. Doch auch der bitterschwarze „The Dark Companion“ zeigt die Vielseitigkeit des neuen Werkes.
Mit „Tiefenrausch“ gibt es zudem einen Track mit überwiegend deutschem Text auf der neuen Veröffentlichung, der von der lyrischen Ästhetik an Rammstein erinnert, aber inhaltlich natürlich zum Kontext der Album-Geschichte passt.

Besonders emotional und inspirierend ist nach langer Zeit die Zusammenarbeit mit dem ehemaligen Bassisten der Band Mathias Opitz, der mit viel Leidenschaft das instrumentale Intro und Interlude zur Platte beisteuerte. Die Verantwortung für den Synthesizer-Sound übernahm hingegen erneut David Hambach, mit dem die Band auch ihre Videos seit einigen Jahren produziert.
Für den Mix vertraute man dem langjährigen Wegbegleiter Hannes Huke (Institut für Wohlklangsforschung, Hannover), der die Band auch Live mit einem brutalen Sound ausstattet. Das Mastering übernahm wiederum Jakob Hansen. Der Däne ist für seinen modernen Stil bekannt und verpasste „The Devourer“ damit den perfekten Feinschliff.

Das epische Artwork stammt dieses Mal vom schwedischen Künstler Pär Olofsson, der nicht erst durch seine atemberaubenden Cover für Aborted oder Exodus in der Szene für Aufregung sorgt.

„The Devourer“ ist die Symbiose aus anspruchsvollem Death Metal, catchigen Riffs, fetten Hooks und dem besonderen SciFi-Stil. Damnation Defaced darf jedem Fan von Bands wie Gojira, Decapitated oder gar Soilwork ans Herz gelegt werden.
